The God Who Sees Me

There are times when I feel unseen.

I can be in a crowded room, surrounded by people, and still feel that ache in my heart. It is a strange kind of loneliness, the kind that does not always come from being physically alone. Sometimes it comes from wondering if anyone truly notices the quiet work, the hidden obedience, the tears behind the smile, or the courage it takes to keep showing up.

Honestly, since I started writing, I have felt that way more often than not.

Writing can be beautiful, healing, and purposeful, but it can also feel lonely. You pour your heart into words. You pray over what God has placed inside of you. You keep showing up, even when you are not sure who is reading, who is listening, or who is being impacted.

Just this week, I asked God a very honest question. “Do You see me?”

The answer did not come suddenly. There was no instant sign or immediate shift in how I felt. But God is so faithful. He always meets me right where I am.

Two days later, a couple of friends and former students came to my book signing. They showed up, not only with their presence, but with words of encouragement and faith. They spoke life into a place in my heart that had been quietly wondering if the work mattered.

Then the following day, I attended the graduation of the school where I had worked. As I stood there, I heard the students cheer for me. They came over and gave me hugs after the ceremony. In that moment, I praised God because He reminded me of something my heart had needed to remember.

He did see me. Not only did He see me, but He had already been working through people, through timing, and through moments I could not have arranged on my own.

Psalm 139:1-2 (NIV) says:

“You have searched me, LORD, and you know me. You know when I sit and when I rise; you perceive my thoughts from afar.”

What comfort there is in knowing that God does not just see the version of us that everyone else sees. He sees all of it.

He sees the questions we are afraid to say out loud. He sees the weariness behind our obedience. He sees the moments we wonder if we are making a difference. He sees us when we feel forgotten, overlooked, or unheard. And He does not turn away.

In Genesis 16:13, Hagar called the Lord “El Roi,” which means “The God Who Sees.” She gave Him that name in a wilderness place, in a moment when she felt alone, mistreated, and uncertain about her future. Yet God met her there.

That is who He is. He is the God who sees us in the crowded room. He is the God who sees us in the quiet disappointment. He is the God who sees us when we are serving, writing, praying, waiting, healing, and wondering if any of it matters. And not only does God see us, but He comes for us.

Jesus said in Matthew 18:12 (NIV):

“What do you think? If a man owns a hundred sheep, and one of them wanders away, will he not leave the ninety-nine on the hills and go to look for the one that wandered off?”

That verse reminds me that God is not distant or passive. He is personal. He notices when our hearts drift into discouragement. He notices when we are hurting. He notices when we feel unseen, even if we are still smiling and still doing what needs to be done.

And He comes close to you. Sometimes He reminds us through Scripture. Sometimes, He reminds us through prayer. Sometimes, He reminds us through a friend, a former student, a hug, a word of encouragement, or a moment we did not expect.

But He reminds us. You are seen. You are known. You are loved. And your obedience matters, even when it feels hidden.

💬 A Thought for You

Maybe you have been feeling unseen, too. Maybe you have been showing up faithfully, but deep down you have wondered if anyone notices. Maybe you have been praying, serving, creating, caring for others, or walking through something heavy, and you have quietly asked God, “Do You see me?”

He does. God sees the parts of your journey that no one else fully understands. He sees the silent sacrifices, the private tears, the unanswered questions, and the courage it takes to keep going. You may feel unseen, but you are never hidden from God.

🙏🏽 A Prayer

Lord, thank You for being El Roi, the God who sees me.

Thank You for seeing me in the places where I feel overlooked, unheard, or forgotten. Thank You for knowing my thoughts before I even have the words to speak them. When I feel invisible, remind me that I am fully known by You.

Help me recognize the ways You are already meeting me. Open my eyes to the encouragement, love, and reminders You send through Your Word and through the people around me.

When my heart grows weary, draw near to me. Remind me that my obedience matters, my life has purpose, and I am never alone. I give you all the glory, honor, and praise. In Jesus’ name, amen.

🙇🏽‍♀️ A Closing Thought

There will be moments when we feel unseen, even in the middle of a crowded room. But our feelings do not change God’s faithfulness.

He sees us. He knows us. He comes for us. And sometimes, in the gentlest ways, He reminds us that we were never forgotten at all.
