Obedience… Even When It’s Awkward

Obedience.
It’s one of those words that sounds so serious. 😬

When I think of obedience, I picture my dog when she was a puppy—ears perked up, tail wagging, pretending to listen while secretly plotting how to grab the food off my plate the second I turn my back. 🐶

Honestly, I think I’m sometimes the same way with God.

I nod along when He says “trust Me” … then five minutes later I’m googling my own backup plan. Or I tell Him, “Yes, Lord, I’ll wait patiently!” … and then I tap my foot like a toddler in the Chick-fil-A drive-thru when the line doesn’t move fast enough.

Obedience is tough because it means giving up control. And giving up control feels about as natural as running a marathon in high heels. (Don’t try it—it won’t end well.🤦🏽‍♀️)

When God Says Move… and You Want to Nap

There are times when God nudges me to do something—pray for someone, encourage a friend, share a part of my story—and my first instinct is: “Um, God, are You sure? I was actually planning on binge-watching something important on Netflix tonight.”

But here’s the thing about obedience: it’s not about convenience. It’s about trust. And every time I’ve stepped out in obedience (even when I felt awkward or reluctant), I’ve seen God move in ways I never could have orchestrated.

Like the time He put it on my heart to reach out to a friend I hadn’t spoken to in months. I argued, I stalled, I told myself, “I’ll do it tomorrow.” But finally, I obeyed. When I called, she burst into tears—she had been praying that someone would reach out. My one little act of obedience was God’s big answer to her prayer.

Obedience may feel small to us, but it can have eternal impact.

The Funny Side of Following God

Here’s the funny part about obedience: God doesn’t just call us to things we’re already comfortable with. No—He calls us to things that stretch us, challenge us, and sometimes make us look ridiculous.

Think about Noah building an ark in the desert 🏜️. Or Peter stepping out of a perfectly good boat to walk on water 🌊. Or me, standing in my kitchen with my oxygen tubing trailing behind me, feeling God prompt me to sing out loud—even though my voice sounds like a frog with laryngitis.

Obedience isn’t always glamorous. Sometimes it’s awkward. Sometimes it’s humbling. Sometimes it feels a little silly.

But it’s also powerful. Because when we obey, we’re not just saying “yes” to God’s request—we’re saying “yes” to His presence, His plan, and His promises.

💡 A Thought for You

What if your next step of obedience is the very thing that unlocks the breakthrough you’ve been praying for?

It doesn’t have to be big. It doesn’t have to be loud. It just has to be yes.

✨ 🤔 Closing Thought:

Obedience may not always make sense in the moment, but it always makes way for God to show up. And honestly? If I can obey Him while dragging a 50-foot oxygen line through the house, you can too. 😉

With grace,
Stacy

🙏🏽 A Prayer for Obedience

Lord, sometimes obedience feels scary, inconvenient, or just plain awkward. But help me trust You more than I trust myself. Teach me to say “yes” quickly, joyfully, and faithfully. Remind me that every step of obedience is a step closer to You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
